Half-size motorcycle engines are an increasingly popular subject for model engineers.Well-known exponents are Bill Connor and Rolf Depping.
At that time JAP engines were used in a variety of motorcycle makers’ bikes: Royal Enfield, HRD, Zenith, Rex, Henley, Terrot, and a number of speedway bikes. The Ariel Red Hunter was a range of single cylinder motorcycles, designed in 1932, based on an overhead valve single cylinder engine developed six years earlier.
Originally a 'sports' version of the Ariel 500, 250 and 350cc versions were developed and became popular with grass track and trials riders.
All Red Hunter bikes have a distinctive dark red petrol and oil tanks. Handling was improved by the addition of rear suspension and telescopic forks and it gained an alloy cylinder head from the 1950s.
Champion racer Sammy Miller had great success with a 500cc Red Hunter in the 1950s.
